How to Build Your Own Solar Panels - DIY

E-bay and your local hardware store has everything that you need to build your own solar panels.

Since you’re thinking of installing solar panel systems to your home or business, chances are you already know the benefits. They’re green, and while saving you a considerable amount on your electricity bill, provide a reliable source of clean energy. They’re quieter than wind turbines, and less intrusive – but they’re also more costly.

The fact that they’re becoming a very popular choice to power homes across the country (and the world) is also down to solar panels being a rather sound investment opportunity; helped along by the Solar America Initiative which announced a $17.6 million investment in 2008.

Around the home, solar panel systems will greatly reduce your greenhouse gas emissions, and enable you to freely run most of your appliances and utilities from an unlimited supply of solar energy – what’s more, they’re fairly straightforward and affordable to install by yourself, as part of a DIY project.

Here’s how to build solar panels the DIY way, in 12 easy steps:


Step One: 
You’ll need the following tools and materials.

● 36 solar cells (commonly used to produce 18 volts of electric power).
● Pressure treated or marine grade plywood, 1x2x10 inches. X2
● Pressure treated or marine grade plywood, 2 x 4 ft.
● Clear sheet of plexiglass, 2 x 4 ft.
Pegboard, 2 x 4 ft.
● Charge controller.
Deep cycle battery.
● DC to AC inverter.
Tabbing wire, 60 ft.
● Bus wire. 15 ft minimum.
Resin flux pen.
Roll of solder + soldering gun.
Power sander or sheets of sand paper.
● Power stapler or staple gun.
● Caulk gun.
● UV protector sealant + paint brush or roller.
● Clear through or transparent silicone.
● Multifunction digital multimeter.
● Crimping pliers.
● Wiremold strips x2.
● Large roll of 20 gauge copper wire, black and red.
● Tile spacers.
● Mending plates.
Electric power drill + drill bits.

Once you’ve got everything together, read on; it’s actually easier than you think.

Step 2:
Measure the pressure treated or marine grade plywood to size and cut, before drilling two holes for threading both negative and positive connection wires.

Step 3:
The pegboard has to fit inside the plywood. Measure and be sure to cut as straight as possible.

Step 4:
Apply the UV protector stain using your paintbrush/roller to both sides of the plywood, as well as the pegboard. Wait to dry before applying a second coat.

Step 5:
When the second coat’s dry, screw together the pegboard and plywood.

Step 6:
Use the resin flux pen to glue on the tabbing and bus wires.

Having trouble tabbing your solar cells? This is the right way to to it. I outline the techniques and the tools needed to do it right. Frustrated because you can't get yours soldered? I can help! It is easy with the right tools and techniques. Also - I have included a short clip at the end detailing the mistakes I have made building my own solar panels. More tips at SimpleDiySolar.com We also cover 2 methods of building solar panels, a resin encapsulation and an inert gas injection method.



Step 7:
Arrange the 36 solar cells on top of the pegboard so they appear as four even rows of nine.

Step 8:
Solder the black and red copper wire to the bus wire and thread them through your pre-drilled holes in the plywood. This creates the negative and positive connections.

Step 9:
Place the clear plexiglass on top of the plywood frame before sealing it tightly with silicon.

Step 10:
Drill holes around the edges of the plexiglass, before using them to screw it securely to the plywood. Wait 24 hours for the silicon to dry.

Step 11:
Remember those positive and negative connections you made? Now it’s time to connect them to the charge controller, before linking them with the deep cycle battery.

Step 12:
From the deep cycle battery, connect the positive and negative connections to the DC to AC inverter. And that’s it! Congratulations, you've just become the proud owner of your own renewable energy power source! Well done.
